What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is an innovative approach to health and wellness that is gaining recognition. Through the targeted application of red light, this therapy offers a stimulating and effective approach for various health purposes. Like cold therapy, red light therapy has caught the attention of various audiences, including professional athletes, fitness enthusiasts and even beauty experts.

How does Red Light Therapy work?

Red light therapy focuses specific wavelengths of red light on the skin to promote various health benefits. This therapy can help reduce inflammation, improve skin condition and stimulate the body's natural healing process. The positive effects include an increase in collagen production, promotion of cell regeneration and relief of certain skin problems. Red light therapy illustrates the growing importance of non-invasive and natural approaches to health and recovery, stimulating the human body to promote its own healing processes.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

  • Mental Sharpness

Red light therapy can improve mental acuity by increasing blood flow to the brain. Improved blood flow means more oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells, which can result in improved cognitive functions, such as concentration, memory and alertness.

  • Performance & Recovery

For athletes, red light therapy can help improve performance and faster recovery after intense training or competitions. This is because red light can improve mitochondrial function, resulting in more efficient energy production and faster recovery of muscle tissue after exercise.

  • Sleep optimization

Red light therapy can help with sleep optimization by regulating the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Exposure to red light in the evening can stimulate natural melatonin production, leading to better sleep quality and a more regular sleep pattern.

  • Healthy Skin

Red light therapy can improve skin health by stimulating collagen production. Collagen is a protein that gives the skin firmness and elasticity. By increasing collagen production, red light can help reduce fine lines, wrinkles and improve the overall texture of the skin.

  • Circadian rhythm

Red light therapy can help regulate the circadian rhythm, also known as the body's natural sleep-wake rhythm. Exposure to red light in the morning can help suppress melatonin production and promote alertness and activity, while exposure to red light in the evening can help stimulate melatonin production and prepare the body for sleep.

  • Improve Blood Flow

Red light therapy can improve blood flow by stimulating the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow. Improved blood flow can lead to better oxygenation of tissues, faster recovery from injuries and an overall improvement in cardiovascular health.

Experts on Red Light Therapy

Dr. Andrew Huberman, a leading neurobiologist and professor of neurobiology at Stanford University, is also known as the host of the Huberman Lab podcast.

In a recent clip, he discusses the benefits of red light therapy, an emerging treatment that uses light in the red and near-infrared spectrum to address a variety of health concerns, such as skin conditions, inflammation and pain relief.

The million dollar question.

But... Does It Really Work?

We could bombard you with scientific studies and controlled experiments (click the button below if you're interested).

In simpler terms, yes , according to current scientific literature, we strongly believe that the majority of people can experience significant benefits by incorporating red light therapy into their daily routine for improved sleep, recovery, and overall proactive health.

Questions about Red Light Therapy

How exactly does red light therapy work?

The best-studied mechanism of action of red and near-infrared light therapy is that it increases energy production in the cells. We can go into this in more detail: The light particles that are specifically released by red and near infrared light react with a receptor within the cell: called Cytochrome C oxidase. This interaction stimulates the mitochondria, the ''energy factories'' of our cells, to use oxygen more efficiently. This allows more energy (ATP) to be produced. When our cells have more energy, bodily functions and our health improve. You can read more about how it works here. Without harmful UV rays, and when it suits you.

Is red light therapy safe?

Yes. After hundreds of studies, scientists conclude that red light therapy is a safe form of therapy without side effects. The original research for the current therapy lamps even came from NASA. Red light LED technology was then used to limit bone and muscle loss in space.

Should I use glasses?

Eye protection must be used when NIR mode is active, including Recovery+ mode. Do not look directly at the LEDs. The beam window covers the entire front surface of the device. If your eyes are more sensitive to light or if you are taking medications that have a history of causing light sensitivity, we recommend that you consult your doctor before treating with a Suprrhealth device.

What benefits will I get from this therapy?

The red light therapy benefits of the wavelengths in our products occur at the cellular level and have been proven in many studies. Red and near-infrared light are energy for your cells. Exposing your body to this light can help your cells function better as they are intended. The human body is complex yet amazing! It is difficult to predict how your body will respond to photobiomodulation and how quickly you will see results. Your cells will decide which healing should occur first.

Is red light therapy the same as infrared sauna lamps?

The short answer, no. For the long answer: It's all about the wavelength. Infrared sauna lamps produce a wavelength of more than 1000nm, and this is purely about generating heat for sweating and blood circulation. Nice and timely, but completely different from our lamp. The Suprrhealth devices hardly get warm, and you certainly won't sweat.

Can I use too much red light therapy?

Yes. If you do too much, the positive effects disappear because you are actually adding more stress to the cells. Stick to less than 20 minutes of total therapy time per day for guaranteed results.

More than that is not harmful, but you will have no or fewer positive effects. Our advice is to gradually increase the dosage when you are just starting out. There is no harmful UV in red light therapy, so you cannot burn. Red light therapy can protect against UV from the sun.

How long does it take to notice results?

Most people immediately feel a difference in energy and a beautiful "glow" on their skin. However, studies measured results after 8 weeks of use. For other targets, such as muscle soreness and joints, some may feel a difference right away, and for others it may take up to 8 hours after use to feel the full effects.

For goals such as muscle growth and visibly firm skin, you should therefore take 4 to 8 weeks of use into account.

If my complaints have resolved, should I stop treatment?

When you notice that your skin is tighter, has fewer wrinkles or other complaints have resolved, we advise you to continue with a maintenance dose of 3 times a week. This way you maintain sustainable benefits in your health.
